Guarding against the three D’s

As we deal with the invisible enemy that is Covid-19, we must be careful to guard our hearts. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23:

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

The three D’s that we must guard our hearts against are: Deadly Denial, Dangerous Desensitization, and Devastating Defeat.

The first, Deadly Denial, occurs when we are in denial about the realities of Covid-19. We just go about living our lives as if this virus is not real and that is foolish. We must acknowledge and accept this for what it is: a deadly pandemic that must be taken seriously. Now is not the time to live in denial about it but to accept it. Consider the response of Habakkuk in Habakkuk chapter 3 verses 17-19:

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; He makes my feet like the deer’s; He makes me tread on my high places.”

Notice that Habakkuk was not living in denial about the state of the union but accepting it and trusting that God had a plan and a purpose. We must do the same. May we accept the way things are and not let the reality of this situation cause us to stop praising God and taking joy in Him. Will you still rejoice in the Lord even in spite of the current circumstances?

The second is Dangerous Desensitization. Dangerous Desensitization is when we become numb to the reality that all over the world there are people who are being infected by this virus in such a way as fighting for their life on a life support machine. If we are not careful, we can become desensitized to what is happening all around us with this virus. The Bible says in Psalm 34:18:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

May our hearts be sensitive to the needs of others right now as we all combat this virus. I encourage you to focus outward and not inward. Look beyond yourself. All you have to do is just listen to the news and hear about the number of deaths or see the pictures of people lying in hospital beds fighting for their lives or people who have lost their jobs. We are to pray and love each other and choose not to be aloof or far off and apathetic because our heavenly Father is close, and He cares. We are to do the same.

The third and final D to guard against is Devastating Defeat. Don’t lose heart! God is on His throne. This will not defeat us! We shall overcome first and foremost by depending and trusting Jesus and taking the practical, necessary steps to combat this. Jesus said in John 14:1:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.“

We are to not let our hearts be troubled. God’s got this! Let’s join together and focus on beating this thing! Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and press on! Have a blessed day. I love you all. God loves you!
